Discover The Old Stables
A narrative exploration of the Triassic sandstone cathedral, where time is measured in drips and green is the only color that matters.
The descent into Mermaids Cave is a transition between worlds. Leaving the dry eucalyptus ridge, one enters a damp, cool microclimate where the temperature drops noticeably.
Here, at the valley floor, the Triassic sandstone begins its dramatic curve overhead, sculpted over millennia by the gentle persistent flow of the Megalong creek system. The air carries a weight here — not of humidity, but of stillness. It is as if the canyon itself is holding its breath, waiting for the ferns to unfurl a little further.
Within the cave exists an ‘Architecture of Silence’. It is not a true silence, but rather a curated soundscape where the soft, rhythmic patter of the cascading waterfall acts as a metronome for the stone. Vibrant ferns, luminous in their green intensity, cling to every moist fissure in the rock face, thriving in the filtered light that manages to reach the cave floor. It is a cathedral of the natural world, unadorned and profoundly peaceful.
As you move deeper into the overhang, the sounds of the upper valley fade entirely. The wind that whistles through the canopy above is absent here. Instead, there is only the internal dialogue of the earth. Geologists speak of the ‘Narabeen Group’ sandstone, but to the visitor, it feels less like rock and more like frozen history — layers of sediment pressed into a record of lost oceans and ancient floods.
For those staying at LOT 101, this detour is more than a mere walk; it is an essential ritual of unhurried discovery. While the main tourist trails of the Blue Mountains often feel like conveyor belts of sight-seeing, Mermaids Cave remains a secret kept by the valley itself. It is a moment to pause, to breathe in the scent of damp earth and stone, and to reconnect with a pace of life that matches the geological time surrounding you.
